How to learn to take pictures
Why are amateur pictures so weak? First of all, because the ordinary photographer is not aware of their weaknesses. This is not a big deal if the snapshot function is strictly protocol. Such photos will be valuable to their author, his relatives and friends as a memory of some big or small event: birthday, a picnic, a well-spent vacation. The trouble happens when a person who picks up a camera realizes himself to be a creator and begins to run wildly, avoiding even the shadow of a doubt of his own giftedness and being unshakably sure that the excess of creative energy easily compensates for the superficiality of knowledge and a careless attitude to work. That is, even if he worked on his own health, but he also puts it all on the Internet, insistently demanding attention and compliments. Having received them, he begins to drift, but not received – he is offended.
It is much better when a novice photographer still realizes that something is missing in his pictures. He is already on the right track. You just need to correctly answer your own question: “What is wrong with my photos?” Having found the answer, you will know what to do next.
Why are my pictures bad? Maybe the camera is to blame? Many come to this conclusion. One has only to buy a camera more expensive, and the pictures will shine. Did not help? We need a new lens – the old one is not sharp enough, not fast enough, not prestigious, after all. More stable tripod? more powerful flash? some exotic filter? .. All this is nonsense. The camera is just a tool in your hands. I agree, professional equipment makes life easier by allowing an experienced photographer to work faster and in a wider range of situations, but it is not able to fill the lack of imagination. If a person cannot make a beautiful photo using a soap box, no one of the most advanced professional cameras will help him.
If my equipment has nothing to do with it, then maybe there’s simply nothing beautiful around me, and why are the pictures not good? Ah, if I only lived in a picturesque reserve, or in an old city, or had a spacious studio, besieged by figured fashion models … Nonsense! How many beautiful and unusual photographs were taken in the slums and in the backyards, and how many uniformly dull pictures are brought annually by tourists from the most beautiful places! If I do not know how to see beauty, then the only fault is the narrowness of my horizons and the lack of curiosity. If you learn to see, and not just watch, you will be amazed at the abundance of photogenic situations scattered literally at every step.
No matter how diligently we seek an excuse for our own failures in the outside world, the true cause of failure is almost always ourselves. The most difficult thing is to realize this unpleasant fact. He is unpleasant, because it hurts our pride, but at the same time he unties our hands. Agree that it is not always possible to change the world around you to please your desires, but you can always change yourself. If I don’t know how, I can learn, if I am weak, I can become stronger. Having a will is the only condition for making oneself better.
The problem with photography is its deceptive simplicity. If half a century ago, the photographer was obliged to know what shutter speed, aperture, film sensitivity, focusing, etc. are, then at present technological progress has made it possible to almost completely automate the shooting process. Even a child can cope with a modern digital camera, not to mention a camera built into a mobile phone. It never occurs to anyone that photography needs to be studied. Yes, and what is there actually to learn? Point & Shoot – Point and Shoot!
Painting doesn’t seem so simple to anyone. Although what is difficult in it? Dip a brush in paint and smear it on the canvas! Easy? Easy. And for some reason not everyone can paint pictures.
Maybe writers live more easily? After all, today any person with a keyboard is already a writer (and this site is a confirmation of this). What could be easier? You click on the buttons – letters appear on the screen. But, far from everyone is able to sit down and write “War and Peace.” By the way, Lev Nikolaevich didn’t even have a keyboard.
Back to the photo. Believe me, handling the camera directly is the simplest thing that a good photographer should be able to do. The ability to see the light, build a composition, express your thoughts and emotions through photography is what is really difficult to learn. But you need to learn, and modern automated cameras are a great help. To a large extent, they free you from the tedious job of defining exposure or sharpening, allowing you to fully concentrate on creativity.
Despite the progress in the field of automation of photography, cameras still need people who would point them at the photographed object and press the buttons. The camera is just a tool, and its task, first of all, is not to interfere with your work.
